Home & Community Based Medicaid Waivers
 

Home & Community Based Waivers are the range of community support-services approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a unit of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, pursuant to the 1915 (c) of the Social Security Act, to be offered to persons who are Elderly or Disabled who could otherwise require the level of care provided in a nursing facility.
 
Home & Community Based Waivers were established by the U.S. Congress to slow the growth of Medicaid spending for nursing home care and institutional placement as the only means for individuals with disabilities to receive support for their needs such as personal care and training.
 
Home & Community Based Waivers enable individuals with disabilities to receive the supports and services necessary for them to live independently in their home and communities and reduces inappropriate institutional placement.  Virginia has six Home & Community Based Waivers:
 
  • AIDS/HIV Waiver
  • Alzheimer's Disease Waiver
  • Day Support Waiver
  • Elderly and Disabled with Consumer Direction Waiver
  • Family Planning Waiver
  • Individual and Family Developmental Disability Support Waiver
  • Mental Retardation Waiver
  • Technology Assisted Waiver
